Note A model of carbon isotopic fractionation and active carbon uptake in phytoplankton

چکیده

The carbon isotopic fractionation of phytoplankton photosynthesis ( p) has been interpreted by previous authors as inconsistent with active bicarbonate uptake. This interpretation contradicts the results of numerous physiological studies demonstrating signi cant active bicarbonate uptake in phytoplankton. Using a simple model of cellular regulation of carbon acquisition we show that an upward curvature of p as a function of the ratio of growth rate to carbon dioxide concentration does not exclude active bicarbonate uptake. Our model describes adequately published carbon isotope data for cyanobacteria, diatoms and coccolithophores consistent with active bicarbonate uptake.

Sources of inorganic carbon for photosynthesis in a strain of Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Diatoms are an important functional group of marine phytoplankton because of their role in the fixation of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and transfer of organic carbon to deep waters. Carbon-concentrating-mechanisms, such as active CO2 and bicarbonate (HCO ) uptake and carbonic 3 anhydrase activity, are believed to be essential to marine photosynthesis, because the main carbon-fixing enzyme,...

Trace Metal-Carbon Interactions in Marine Phytoplankton: Implications on the Cellular, Regional, and Global Scale

Trace metal availability modulates carbon uptake by phytoplankton, which in turn affects the carbon cycle on regional and global scales. This thesis investigates mechanisms and implications of trace metal-phytoplankton interactions at cellular, regional and global scales. On the cellular scale, we develop a model to explain carbon isotopic fractionation of photosynthesis ( p) as a function of c...

Bicarbonate uptake by Southern Ocean phytoplankton

[1] Marine phytoplankton have the potential to significantly buffer future increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. However, in order for CO2 fertilization to have an effect on carbon sequestration to the deep ocean, the increase in dissolved CO2 must stimulate primary productivity; that is, marine phototrophs must be CO2 limited [Riebesell et al., 1993]. Estimation of the extent of bica...

Light-dependent carbon isotope fractionation in the coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi

The carbon isotopic composition of marine phytoplankton varies significantly with growth conditions. Aqueous CO2 concentration [CO2] and algal growth rate (m) have been suggested to be important factors determining isotope fractionation («p). Here we examine «p of the coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi in relation to CO2 concentration and light conditions in dilute batch cultures. Cells were in...

Effect of growth rate and CO, concentration on carbon isotopic fractionation by the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

The carbon isotopic composition (813C) of the marine diatom PhaeodactylurY1 tricomutum was measured over a series of growth rates (p) in a chemostat system in which both the Si3C and the concentration of aqueous CO, [CO,(aq)] were measured. CO,(aq) ranged from 0.64 to 35 pmol kg-l and growth rates from 0.5 to 1.4 d-l. eP, the biological fractionation factor associated with carbon fixation, was ...
